Home \ News \ New screening test for macular degeneration

The screening test only takes a few minutes and it is recommended for all patients age 21 and older.  The new technology allows us to measure macular pigment optical density (MPOD).  Macular pigment levels are an important protective mechanism against oxidation of cellular membranes and tissue damage from ultra-violet light.  The MPOD score is evaluated along with ten other AMD risk factors.

Recent clinical research shows that steps can be taken to prevent macular degeneration.  Nutritional supplements are recommended in people with significant risk factors.  In some cases, low levels of macular pigment can be restored by taking antioxidants such as Zeaxanthin and Lutein.
